About Bob Olson: The former Northern State head coach and athletic director graduate with both a bachelor’s (1977) and master’s degree (1980) from Northern State College. An Aberdeen native, Olson attended NSU in the mid-1970s and played collegiate basketball for legendary coach Bob Wachs. When Wachs retired following the 1984-85 season, Olson was selected as the 19th men’s basketball coach in program history. For the next 14 years, Olson led NSU teams to national prominence at the NAIA and NCAA II levels, compiling a 305-129 career record. He coached 27 all-conference players, five NAIA All-Americans, and one NCAA II first-team All-American. Olson was named the Northern Sun Coach of the Year in 1990-91, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1995-96, and 1997-98.
Â
NSU made five NAIA National Tournament appearances, reaching the national championship game in 1994 and 1995, finishing as the runner-up. The Wolves earned national post-season berths in their first four seasons at the NCAA Division II level, highlighted by a North Central Region Championship and Elite Eight berth in 1997-98.
Â
In 1999, Olson was named the athletic director following the retirement of Jim Kretchman. He served in that capacity until his retirement in the spring of 2012. In addition to his time as the men’s basketball head coach, Olson led the women’s program to a 44-10 record in two seasons at the helm and was an assistant coach for the football and track and field programs. Olson was also well known on campus, teaching in the health and physical education department from 1983-99. He also served on the NCAA Championships Committee and oversaw the start of the Barnett Center expansion project, which included the NSU wrestling room, basketball offices and locker rooms, and strength and conditioning center. Olson was recognized as the recipient of the Kretchman Coaching Award in 2011 and served as the Gypsy Days Parade Marshal in 2012.
Â
Renovations: The northwest corner of the room welcomed the Wolves Fueling Station in January of 2017. The fueling station includes TruMoo chocolate milk, bananas, and protein bars giving Northern State student-athletes the ability to recover after workouts and pick up a quick snack during the busy school day all free of cost.
